On 13 June 2018, Stevenson, Wong & Co. Partner Ms. Sherlynn Chan attended the Seminar on “Hong Kong as an ideal hub for deal making in the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Bay Area” co-organized by The Hong Kong Association and the Hong Kong Economic Trade Office, London, United Kingdom. The seminar was held at Clifford Chance’s headquarters in Canary Wharf, and was well-received, attracting over 150 attendees internationally.

The Secretary for Justice, Ms. Teresa Cheng, SC was invited to be the keynote speaker and delivered an excellent speech on how the legal and financial framework of Hong Kong makes Hong Kong an ideal hub for deal making in the Greater Bay Area. Sir Douglas Flint, the Chairman of The Hong Kong Association and Special Envoy to China’s Belt and Road Initiative appointed by the Chancellor in December 2017, also highlighted the opportunities for England and other countries to be a part of a vast number of infrastructure projects and investments under the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Xi announced his vision for the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013. The “Greater Bay Area” refers to the Chinese government’s scheme to link 9 cities (namely, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing) and 2 special administrative regions ie. Hong Kong and Macau into an integrated economic and business hub.

There are plans being drawn up for the Greater Bay Area which aim to build a world class city cluster of the above 11 cities with a combined GDP of some US$ 1.4 trillion. By 2030 the region will play a leading role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

On 12 June 2018, SW Private Partner Ms. Sherlynn Chan was invited to visit the Rothschild Archive London as many of SW Private Clients have chosen Rothschild Wealth Management as their preference private bank. The Rothschild Archive was established in 1978 by Victor, 3rd Lord Rothschild. In 1999 the ownership of the Archive was transferred to The Rothschild Archive Trust, an independent body of family members and advisers committed to securing the future of the collection and to developing its use by the academic community.

The collections of The Rothschild Archive London are many and varied, reflecting the many facets of the Rothschild family’s history. It primarily holds the business records of the London firm of N M Rothschild & Sons, together with some papers of Rothschild banking businesses in Paris and Vienna as well as trading records in Asia, i.e. China, Japan etc.

During the visit, Director of Rothschild Archive, Ms. Melanie Aspey shared the history and purpose of the Archive in promoting the value of combining business with humanity.

On 11 June 2018, Stevenson, Wong & Co. Partner Ms. Heidi Chui and Associate Mr. Gordon Tsang were invited to give a presentation to the senior management and core staff of Cinda International Holdings Limited. They shared current hot topics regarding capital markets including “Weighted Voting Right”, “Biotechnology Company”, “Unicorn”, “Secondary Listed” and “Three + H”. They also analyzed the regulatory system in different markets, the prospectus of Xiaomi, the influence of stock connect in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

The participants said that the sharing was inspiring and they should take advantage of the opportunities arising from the financial technology. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange recently announced the new revised regulations and the participants should seize this golden opportunity.

On 9 June 2018, Stevenson, Wong & Co. Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, Ms. Heidi Chui attended the “Conference of Collaboration between Lawyers in Hong Kong and China” with her associates Mr. Kyle Lo and Mr. Jensen Chang. The event was well-received and attracted nearly 60 participants including entrepreneurs from Shandong.

In the first session, Ms. Heidi Chui, Mr. Kyle Lo and Mr. Jensen Chang gave an introduction about the firm to the participants on matters relating to milestones, awards and recognitions, events and services.

In the second session, Ms. Heidi Chui was invited to deliver the keynote speech on the topic of “Listing in Hong Kong. She shared some samples on certain issues about listing in Hong Kong such as the criteria and conditions. She also delivered a topic on “The Strategies on Cross-Border Litigation Involving Hong Kong and the Mainland China”.

On 6-9 June 2018, Stevenson, Wong & Co. Partners Mr. Willy Cheng and Ms. Lai Lam attended Interlaw 2018 Asia Pacific & EMEA Regional Meeting held in London. The Asia Pacific & EMEA Regional Meeting was well attended by 112 delegates from multiple jurisdictions.

The theme of the Asia Pacific & EMEA Regional Meeting was “Changes”. The legal market has experienced fundamental changes in recent years such as a new breed of client and business development; multi-generational workforce; work-life balance; social networking for marketing and developing client relationships and the impact of technology.

During the event, Mr. Cheng attended several Special Business Team Meetings including “Managing Partners’ Breakfast”, “Mergers and Acquisitions” and “Banking, Finance and Insolvency”. Ms. Lam is the Asia Pacific Chair of Interlaw’s Diversity, Inclusion & Community Group and co-chaired the Diversity, Inclusion and Community Breakfast on 7 June. Ms. Zia Bhaloo QC, Mr. Chris White and Ms. Avita Grewal were invited to deliver a talk on the topic of “How Diversity and Inclusion are Changing Legal Business”. She also attended some Special Business Team Meetings including “Real Estate” and “Joint Meeting of Arbitration, ADR, Sports Media and Entertainment”.

On 8 June 2018, Stevenson, Wong & Co. Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, Ms. Heidi Chui was invited to attend an event in Beijing, hosted by Women in Arbitration (“WIA”). The event was attended by nearly 50 distinguished guests including the former chairman of the Appellate Body in WTO, arbitrator of ICSID Ms. Zhang Yue Jiao, ambassador of Zimbabwe Ms. Mavis Sibanda, representatives from arbitration institutions, in-house solicitors, practising lawyers, arbitrators and judges.

The welcome speech was given by Ms. Yeung Ling, the vice secretary of the Hong Kong Arbitration Center and the chairman of Shanghai Association. She also delivered a speech on the topic of “Arbitrations and Women: Situation, Confusion and Effort”. Afterwards, the guests and the participants held discussions on womens’ development in the field of arbitration.
