Partner Heidi Chui Invited by Department of Justice of the HKSAR and CIETAC Hong Kong Arbitration Center as Webinar Guest Speaker

On 17 August 2021, our Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, Ms. Heidi Chui, was invited by Department of Justice of the HKSAR (DoJ) and the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) Hong Kong Arbitration Center (CIETAC HK Arbitration Center) as a guest speaker of a webinar titled “Practical Implementation of the Arrangement Concerning Mutual Assistance in Court-ordered Interim Measures in Aid of Arbitral Proceedings by the Courts of the Mainland and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”.

The webinar was co-organised by the DoJ and the CIETAC HK Arbitration Center, and has invited distinguished guests including Ms. Kun Liu, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Judicial Affairs – Office of the Supreme People’s Court; Ms. Teresa Cheng, Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR, and Mr. Chengjie Wang, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of CIETAC to discuss and share about the interim measures arrangement between Mainland and Hong Kong.

During the webinar, Ms. Chui discussed about the relevant statutes and factors to consider when applying for interim measures including an asset freezing order through an overall introduction of the Hong Kong arbitration system and several key case studies. She also shared her practical experience and tips for applying for interim measures in Hong Kong with the audience.

The webinar was a great success and has promoted further communications between Mainland and Hong Kong in terms of the arbitration practice and the development of dispute resolution mechanism in the Greater Bay area.

Partner Heidi Chui Reappointed as Lay Assessor of The Medical Council of Hong Kong

Our Partner and Head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, Ms. Heidi Chui, has been reappointed as a Lay Assessor by The Medical Council of Hong Kong (“the Council”), effective from 3 October 2021 for a term of 3 years. Ms. Chui is also a member of the Preliminary Investigation Committee of the Council.

Ms. Chui is an arbitrator on the panel of The Law Society of Hong Kong, one of the few solicitors who got accreditation and listed on the panel. She is also an arbitrator of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, Shanghai International Arbitration Center, Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, Hainan International Arbitration Court (Hainan Arbitration Commission), Nanjing Arbitration Commission, Guangzhou Arbitration Commission, Ningbo Arbitration Commission and Langfang Arbitration Commission.

She is also an accredited mediator of Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, The Law Society of Hong Kong and a Panel Mediator for Buildings Management Cases of the Lands Tribunal, and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (U.K.). She is also a China Appointed Attesting Officer as appointed by the Ministry of Justice PRC.

Stevenson, Wong & Co. Delivered Multiple CPD Courses for HKICPA

Stevenson, Wong & Co. was honoured to be invited by The Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) to deliver courses for its continuing professional development (CPD) programmes. HKICPA offers a series of e-Learning courses aiming to address members’ professional development needs in the areas of compliance and corporate finance in Hong Kong. Our firm’s corporate finance department prepared the following topics to be offered by HKICPA:

(1) Recent trends of cross-listing and spin-off on another stock exchange between the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the A-Share Markets listed companies

This course was co-delivered by our Partner and Head of Corporate Finance Department, Mr Hank Lo, Partner, Mr Rodney Teoh and Senior Manager of Commercial and Corporate Finance Department, Dr. Rain Huang. The course introduced how Hong Kong Stock Exchange issuers may raise funds on A-share markets and conversely how A-share issuers may raise funds on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by means of cross-listing and spin-off. The speakers also analysed in detail both Mainland and Hong Kong regulatory requirements involved in different cross-border fund raising and spin-off activities and illustrated with case studies.

(2) An Overview of a Listing Project

This course was co-delivered by our Partner and Head of Corporate Finance Department, Mr Hank Lo, Senior Associate, Mr Terence Lau and Senior Manager of Commercial and Corporate Finance Department, Dr. Rain Huang. The course offered a detailed explanation of listing criteria as well as suitability for listing. The syllabus dissected IPO projects and included topics such as reorganisation, different listing structures for Mainland enterprises, due diligence, prospectus drafting and share offer.

(3) Getting listed in the U.S. and the subsequent “Home-coming” listing on the HKEX

This course was co-delivered by our Partner and Head of Corporate Finance Department, Mr Hank Lo, Partner, Mr Gordon Tsang and Associate, Mr Bun Chan. The course introduced listing criteria of U.S. securities markets, the features and rules of Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC). The course also offered a detailed explanation of different pathways by which U.S.-listed China concept stocks may return to Hong Kong stock markets, as well as regulatory issues involved in each pathway.
